I’ve booked an outdoor session for my family, what should I expect on the day?

When I arrive at your session we will hang out and chat for a few minutes before we get started. Don’t be offended if I pay a little more attention to your kids than you - it’s important that they are comfortable and can enjoy themselves. Then we’ll get into the fun stuff. I like to keep the session moving, so you won’t be sitting still for too long. We might go for a walk or let the kids explore and play together. Don’t worry it’s not strenuous, there is still plenty of time to sit and cuddle your kids too. I will give you some direction and will guide you into the area with the best light but I prefer your connections and interactions to be real and not posed by me.

An outdoor family shoot will last around 1.5 hours. I usually start my sessions approximately 2 hours before sunset so it can vary from 3:30pm in winter to 6:30pm in summer. Why do I shoot then? As the sun gets lower in the sky it casts a soft golden glow over everything. The quality of the light is perfect for photographs and can add a magic to your memories. It is my absolute favourite time to be outside and taking photographs.

What should we wear?

The most important thing is to wear something you love and feel confident and comfortable in. It’s nice to have everyone in colours that work well together but you don’t have to be matchy matchy. Neutrals, soft or earthy colours photograph really well, as do different textures like cotton, wool, linen, denim, lace. Winter can be a great time to rug up in different layers. In warmer weather, soft fabrics and long, flowy skirts and dresses look great as they show movement and light. It’s often easiest to choose your own outfit first and go from there. Don’t be afraid of a bit of colour but I DO recommend avoiding big logos, character t-shirts and text as they can be very distracting in photos. You want the focus on your family connection, not the words on their t-shirt.

For the little ones, soft and solid colours are classic and flattering on baby skin. Keep it simple, too many accessories will distract from all that newborn gorgeousness. Have a backup outfit ready for baby in case of a wardrobe malfunction and if you have a favourite wrap or blanket we can use that too.

Don’t worry too much, you want to look like yourself in photos. As long as you are comfortable in what you are wearing you will look fabulous. If you feel like you need help with this let me know. For some colour and texture inspiration I have a Pinterest board here to give you some ideas.

What if it rains?

If it rains on the day of your shoot we will reschedule to another day that works for both of us. I will check the forecast a few days beforehand and contact you if rain or miserable weather is on the horizon.

What if we are sick and need to cancel the session?

If you or your children are sick on the day I am happy to reschedule. Obviously as much advanced warning as you can give is appreciated. Similarly, if I am sick I may have to postpone the session as I don’t want to be sharing my illness with your family.

A bit about Covid - if your booked date cannot proceed due to government regulations, your session will be postponed to a date that works for both of us.

What happens if the kids go a little crazy?

It happens. And it’s nothing out of the ordinary. I believe that kids should be kids, even on a photo shoot. Children are best in front of a camera when there is no pressure and they can have fun. If they are up for cuddles with you or their siblings then great, but I won’t force it on them. Try not to stress, think of it more like a chance to actually hang out and play with your kids, instead of worrying about them smiling for the camera. Be present and have fun with them. It’s a good idea to bring a snack for those hungry toddlers, but otherwise leave the rest to me. It’s my job to find beautiful moments, even if the kids are having a grumpy day. I’ll give them time to let out their energy and run around. We’ll keep things moving so they don’t get too bored. Hopefully the parents might even have a bit of fun too!

What happens after my session?

I start the process of culling and editing your images down to the best 70 or so that will tell the story of your session. Around 3-4 weeks after your session you will receive a link to your own password protected online gallery, where you can view and download your images. You are then free to share with family and friends and print them as many times as you wish. Think of all of those family Christmas presents you will have ready to go!

I still have questions, how can I contact you?

No problem, send me an email or give me a call on 0410 443 775. I’d be more than happy to discuss them with you.

Cheers,

Erica xx
