Newborn option 2.jpg

I’ve booked a newborn session, what should I expect on the day?

The session will last around 1 to 2 hours. I’m flexible so we can take a bit more time to meet baby’s needs - feeding, changing and all that fun stuff. When I arrive I’ll take a quick look around the house to work out where the best light is. If you have an older child I might ask them for a tour as it helps me get to know them, and more importantly for them to get to know me. The more comfortable they are around me the more fun they will have! My shoots are lifestyle sessions, meaning there is limited posing and smiling for the camera. I will guide you into a certain room or spot with great light, but I want your connections and interactions to be real. I might get you guys to all hang out on the couch but then have you do your own thing - read stories together, cuddle, have fun. If you would like to include an activity like baby’s bath time in your session, just let me know.

What should we wear?

The most important thing is to wear something you love and feel confident and comfortable in. It’s nice to have everyone in colours that work well together but you don’t have to be matchy matchy. Neutrals, soft or earthy colours photograph really well, as do different textures like cotton, wool, linen, denim, lace. Winter can be a great time to rug up in different layers. In warmer weather, soft fabrics and long, flowy skirts and dresses look great as they show movement and light. It’s often easiest to choose mum’s outfit first and go from there. Don’t be afraid of a bit of colour but I DO recommend avoiding big logos, character t-shirts and text as they can be very distracting in photos. You want the focus on your family connection, not the words on their t-shirt.

For the little ones, soft and solid colours are classic and flattering on newborn skin. Keep it simple, too many accessories will distract from all that newborn gorgeousness. Have a backup outfit ready for baby in case of a wardrobe malfunction and if you have a favourite wrap or blanket we can use that too.

Don’t worry too much, you want to look like yourself in photos. As long as you are comfortable in what you are wearing you will look fabulous. If you feel like you need help with this let me know. For some colour and texture inspiration I have a Pinterest board here to give you some ideas.

What if my house is a mess? Do I need to clean up before the photo shoot?

Please don’t stress too much about this, your house doesn’t need to be perfect. Clear the clutter so it’s not too distracting and if you can make the bed we are off to a good start. It’s great if your house still looks lived in, not catalogue perfect. Signs of your every day life are a good thing! I won’t be working in every room in the house so you can always move the laundry baskets full of clothes into one space and close the door (I get it, I have kids too!). The newborn shoots will usually take place in a few main rooms, the ones you spend the most time in together. If you have a nursery I will take some photos there, but I also like to shoot in the master bedroom, kids room and lounge room. I need natural light so we may have to move around to where it is best.

What happens if my baby is unsettled or my kids go a little crazy?

It happens. And it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Babies might be unsettled, they might cry and squirm. But despite how you feel at the time it won’t last long and we will still be able to capture some beautiful photos. Those little wrinkled newborn faces are so sweet and priceless. A full body yawn as they are fighting sleep can make a beautiful photo. You will get plenty of time to relax and cuddle your baby while I am there so I find babies are generally pretty happy with the undivided attention.

As for the older siblings I believe that kids should be kids, even on a photo shoot. If they are up for cuddles with their new baby brother or sister then great, but I won’t force it on them. I’ll give them time to let out their energy and have fun. If they want to dance, sing, jump on the couch (and you are happy for them to do it!) then great. I’ll have my camera ready for those shots too!

What if we are sick and need to cancel the session?

If you or your children are sick on the day I am happy to reschedule. Obviously as much advanced warning as you can give is appreciated. Similarly, if I am sick I may have to postpone the session as I don’t want to be sharing my illness with your family.

What happens after my session?

I start the process of culling and editing your images down to the best 70 or so that will tell the story of your session. About 3-4 weeks after your session you will receive a link to your own password protected online gallery, where you can view and download your images. You are then free to share with family and friends and print them as many times as you wish. Think of all of those family Christmas presents you will have ready to go!

I still have questions, how can I contact you?

No problem, send me an email or give me a call on 0410 443 775. I’d be more than happy to discuss them with you.

Cheers,

Erica xx
